Use an expression pedal or knob to smoothly crossfade between two different pedals or pedal chains. For example, smoothly crossfade between an overdrive and a fuzz pedal. Active circuitry, buffered output.

The CROSSFADE pedal has two inputs, one output, and jack for an expression pedal.

If the volume of either input is turned off, the expression pedal can be used as a volume pedal. For example, turn the volume down on the chain feeding input A, then the pedal will crossfade from A (nothing) to B (something).

True bypass flows from input A to the output.

Since the audio is sent through the expression pedal, the quality of audio depends on the quality of the expression pedal. Some expression pedals still allow a little amount of the other side of audio at each extreme of its sweep. And older expression pedals may have crackly pots. CROSSFADE has been tested on Roland EV-5 and M-Audio MGear EX-P (best with the mode switch on 'M-Audio'.
